The Rt Revd David Hamid
Bishop David was born in Scotland to Scottish and Burmese
parents, he spent much of his younger life in Canada.
He
was educated at McMaster University and Trinity College of
the University of Toronto, and was ordained in the diocese of Niagara
where he served as a curate then parish priest, developing strong interests
in church growth, ecumenical lay formation and ministry among refugees
and migrants.
David is passionate about international mission and development and
served for 10 years as the Mission Co-ordinator for Latin America, providing
practical programmes of evangelism, training, and youth ministry,
as well as supporting mission partners in the field, developing policy
and working on a range of international justice and advocacy issues.
In 1996 he moved to London to become Director of Ecumenical Affairs
and Studies of the Anglican Consultative Council, responsible for the
official dialogues and relations with Baptist, Lutheran, Orthodox, Oriental
Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, as well the doctrinal commissions
of the Anglican Communion. He has been a consultant to the WCC Faith
and Order Commission and to the Joint Working Group between the WCC and
the Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Continuation Committee
of the movement to establish a Global Christian Forum.
David speaks Portuguese,
French, Spanish and Italian. He enjoys music, travel and
film.
David
has been married to Colleen, a medical researcher, for 28
years. They have two sons, Jonathan and Michael. He was consecrated bishop
on 17 October 2002.
Bishop David is the lead bishop for pastoral oversight
of the archdeaconries of Gibraltar, France, and Germany and
Northern Europe. Throughout the diocese he has responsibility
for ministry and vocation matters, including the oversight
of the work of the Director of Ordinands and the Director
of Training, title curacies and reader ministry as Warden of Readers.
He also oversees the work of locum clergy and issues the Bishop’s Permission to Officiate (PtO). He also has ecumenical responsibility
in the diocese for relations with the Porvoo Lutheran Churches, the Old
Catholic Churches, the churches of the Meissen and Reuilly Agreements,
and relations with the French, Spanish and Portuguese (RC) Episcopal
Conferences.
