“Our church never looked like this before!” was one response to the first Animal Blessing Service ever at St. Alban's in the Danish capital of Copenhagen on Sunday 11 September. The service was led by Rev Palle Thordal and Licensed Lay Reader Ursula Sonnewald.
There were 13 dogs, one dog picture, 3 cat pictures and 34 humans. They started outside the church with Revd Palle Thordal blessing each animal and picture in the shade because the sun was so warm. Then they walked into church and the dogs were quiet except for one, who was on his owner's arm when he read the Psalm (it was supposed to look as if the dog was reading). At the end of the Isaiah reading all the dogs started barking. but when the organist started playing and the congregation sang, they all went quiet again and remained quiet until the end of the service. Ursula, who conducted the service, said It was a fantastic feeling to see the happy owners and all the dogs, big and small. Thank God for the animals!
