Diocese in Europe

Bishop in Europe to be Bishop of Chichester

PRESS RELEASE
PR9/00 31/10/00

The Rt Revd John Hind, Bishop in Europe, is to be the next Bishop of Chichester. He succeeds the Rt Revd Dr Eric Kemp and will take up his new post after Easter, next year.

Prior to being appointed Bishop in Europe in 1993, following a two-year spell as Bishop of Horsham, Bishop John was Principal of Chichester Theological College from 1982 -91.

He has lived in Sussex for 18 years. Commenting on his appointment he said "We have lived in Sussex longer than anywhere else, but most of my ministry has been outside the county. I am particularly pleased to be called to be responsible for leading the Mission of the Anglican Church in Sussex. It already feels like home and since I do not know the details or the inside story that well, I look forward to learning and meeting more people."

Bishop Hind has chaired the Faith and Order Advisory Group since 1991. He is a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and a member of the Inter Anglican Standing Commission on Ecumenical Relations.

Bishop John is married to Janet, and they have three adult sons.
