Bishop Geoffrey welcomes new Archbishop
Bishop Geoffrey welcomes new archbishop The Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe, The Rt Revd Geoffrey Rowell, has welcomed the news of the appointment of the Most Revd Rowan Williams as the next Archbishop of Canterbury.
In a statement issued today he said:
I warmly welcome the appointment of Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury. As a long-standing theological colleague and friend I have no doubt that he will bring many gifts to the leadership of the Church of England, the Anglican Communion, and the quest of Christian unity: a deep and contemplative spirituality and a critical and discerning theological mind concerned to challenge the easy political and social assumptions of our society.
His passionate engagement with the truth of the Gospel and concern for the faithful reading of the Scriptures by the church, is always in the context of a compassionate pastoral concern for people in the reality of their lives.
Archbishop Rowan, his wife, Jane, and their family need to be held in our prayers as they seek to prepare for the heavy demands of this new ministry.
