Diocese in Europe

CHURCH OF ENGLAND’S SECRET GEMS UNCOVERED

A newly designed brochure outlining the work of the Diocese in Europe is being sent to Cathedrals all over Britain. It includes the diocesan map, listing the many chaplaincies which make up the 44th diocese in the Church of England.

As well as offering contact details for congregations and chaplains the leaflet includes some fascinating facts about the diocese which covers one-sixth of the earth’s land surface, such as:-

  • In 45 countries around the European continent
  • Over 270 congregations in the diocese
  • 140 licensed clergy
  • A Diocesan and Suffragan Bishop
  • A diocese covering one-sixth of the world’s land surface
  • Working across 9 time zones

The concise directory also chronicles the history of the diocese, which dates back to Pre-Reformation times, and is still welcoming new chaplaincies and congregations to serve changing population needs and offer an English speaking service across Europe.

Adrian Mumford, the Diocesan Secretary, says “Many people in Britain forget that we work in exactly the same way as the historic dioceses in England, such as Winchester, Durham or Peterborough. Many thousands of Anglicans holiday within Europe and want to find a branch of their church in places as far afield as Madeira or Moscow, Helsinki or Casablanca. Many others are moving to live or work in other European countries and we find we are constantly responding to requests for new congregations to offer that unique, but inclusive, ministry for which the Church of England is renowned.”
