Victoria Cross in Madeira

The English Church in Madeira has a newly unveiled memorial plaque on
its walls celebrating the life and exploits of a Victoria Cross hero
who is buried in a cemetery nearby.
Captain Cecil Buckley served in the Royal Navy and was awarded
the VC on May 29th 1855 for his actions during the Crimean
War. Captain Buckley died in December 1872, aged 42, and
was buried in the English Cemetery in Funchal. His grave had been overlooked
until its recent discovery by the Victoria Cross Society who arranged
for the plaque to be displayed in Holy Trinity church.
It was unveiled by 27 year old Corporal Johnson Beharry who
is currently the youngest surviving holder of the medal which
had its origins in the Crimean War and is awarded for “gallantry of the
highest order”.
