Diocese in Europe:
Calendar and Prayer Diary, July-December 2008
This
calendar has been compiled to help us to pray together for one
another and for our common concerns. Each chaplaincy, with the
communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a year, according
to the following pattern:
Eastern
Archdeaconry - January, February
Archdeaconry
of France - March, April
Archdeaconry
of Gibraltar - May, June
Italy
& Malta Archdeaconry - July
Archdeaconry
of North West Europe - August, September
Diocesan
staff - mainly in September
Archdeaconry
of Germany and Northern Europe
Nordic
and Baltic Deanery - October
Germany - November
Swiss
Archdeaconry - November, December
Each
Archdeaconry, with its Archdeacon, is remembered on a Sunday. On the
other Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect all of us (e.g.
reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local
applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals).
Some chaplains might like to supplement or substitute some of these
intentions with prayers for the other chaplaincies in their deanery.
Most Diocesan staff are also prayed for in September, unless another
date is more appropriate.
We
also include the Anglican Cycle of Prayer (daily, updates on www.aco.org),
the Porvoo Cycle (weekly, marked ** in this leaflet, www.porvoochurches.org),
and festivals and commemorations, which may be observed according to
local custom, from the Common Worship Lectionary (www.cofe.anglican.org/worship/liturgy/commonworship).
All are published annually, and available from Church House
Bookshop, Great Smith Street, London SW1P 3NZ. Information regarding
Chaplaincies is as shown as in the 2008 Year Book unless updated on
the diocesan website.
Sundays and Festivals,
printed in bold type, have special readings in the Common
Worship Lectionary. Lesser
Festivals, printed in normal type, have collects in the Common
Worship Lectionary)
Commemorations,
printed in italics,
may have collects
in Exciting
Holiness,
and additional, non-biblical, readings for all of these may be found
in Celebrating
the Saints (both SCM-Canterbury Press).
(DEL)
refers to the week of the Daily Eucharistic Lectionary, to help those
who use a Missal.
This
July, bishops from the worldwide Anglican Communion will be attending
the Lambeth Conference. The discussions and informal contacts made
at Lambeth play a big part in holding together the Anglican
Communion. During this period, you are invited to pray for local
issues related to what the bishops are discussing the same day: for
example, evangelism, social justice, the environment, ecumenical
initiatives and contact with people of other faiths. You may also
like to use the Lambeth Conference Prayer:
Pour
down upon us, O God, the gifts of your Holy Spirit, that those who
prepare for the Lambeth Conference may be filled with wisdom and
understanding. May they know at work within them that creative
energy and vision which belong to our humanity, made in your image
and redeemed by your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Another
special time of prayer is Creationtide, from September 1 to October
4, proposed by the European Christian Environmental Network (Time
for God’s Creation, www.cec-kek.org)
as “an opportunity to reflect together on God the creator and on
the gift of life.” It has just been announced (February 2008),
that this year, the Church of England will be participating
officially for the first time. In some places, this will mean a
special service; in others, an extended programme of study or an
environmental project.
SUNDAY
INTERCESSIONS should,
by tradition, include prayer for Bishop Geoffrey and the local head
of State by name. In addition, prayers may
also include
Bishop David (the Suffragan Bishop) and, among the heads of other
states, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the leaders of those other
countries whose citizens may belong to the congregation.
