Section 6. Safeguarding Training

The House of Bishops’ Safeguarding Policy states that the Church ‘will train and equip church officers to have the confidence and skills they need to care and support children, young people and vulnerable adults and to recognise and respond to abuse.’

Safeguarding Training Modules

Who gets what training in the chaplaincy?

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list but aims to cover the most common roles in a chaplaincy.

Basic Awareness

The Basic Awareness course can be completed by any member of the congregation, to improve their understanding of abuse and enable them to help build a culture of informed vigilance within the Church.

For some roles Basic Awareness Training is mandatory, but it is also strongly recommended that Church Officers in any role complete the training.  This can include those in less obvious roles, such as Vergers, Servers, Welcomers, Caretakers, Refreshment helpers, Shop staff, Sidespersons, Flower Arrangers, Administrative staff, Bell Ringers, Choir members, Music Group members (including sound/AV).

For those in roles where Basic Awareness is mandatory, Refresher Training must be completed every 3 years.

You can access the online Basic Awareness Safeguarding Training here.

Foundation and Leadership

Foundation and Leadership Training is arranged by contacting your Archdeacon's office.
