A SENSE OF HOPE IN A HISTORIC MOMENT

Bishop Robert and Archdeacon of Italy and Malta, Vickie Sims have been recalling the sense of hope and encouragement as they have joined the Archbishop of Canterbury among Anglican visitors who were guests of the Community of Sant'Egidio at the historic city of Assisi in Northern Italy.

Archbishop Justin was greeted by Pope Francis in Assisi during a day of prayer for peace. After shaking hands and chatting with dozens of participants, the Pope sat down for lunch with them in the Franciscan convent in the Umbrian hill town where St Francis was born.

The International Meeting, under the title "THIRST FOR PEACE: Religions and cultures in dialogue" ran from 18th to 20th September 2016.

30 years after the historical Day of Prayer for Peace promoted by Pope John Paul II on 27th October 1986, men and women of different religions and cultures, united in the hope that the "Spirit of Assisi" could bring peace in a world wounded by violence and war, during their 3 days, for dialogue and prayer.

Along these 30 years the Spirit of Assisi reached many cities of the world through the International Meetings "Men and Religions", promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio in cooperation with local dioceses, where the representatives of the religions of the world and people of culture and politics meet together in dialogue and pray, building the base for a future of peace.
