New Bishop's Attaché & Director of Communications

We are delighted to announce that Damian Thwaites will be joining the Diocese from 1st October. Damian is coming to a newly created joint post. He will be Attaché to Bishop Robert in his role as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the European Institutions, and he will be Diocesan Director of Communications. Damian will be based in Brussels. As Attaché, Damian will represent the Anglican Communion to the EU Institutions, the Council of Europe and OSCE on behalf of the Bishop. As Diocesan Director of Communications, Damian will promote the work of the Diocese, handling media relations, digital communications, publications and training.

Damian comes to us after a senior and wide-ranging career in the UK Civil Service, including working on trade relationships with Turkey and EFTA States as well as diplomatic relations with Russia. He has spent many years working with the UK Representation to the EU. He brings skills in international negotiations, change management and media relations. He has experience of media and communications planning in his Civil Service areas as well as in his local parish in Peterborough Diocese.  He speaks several European languages.

Damian says: ‘I am looking forward immensely to joining Bishop Robert and the Diocesan Team in October and offering my skills in the service of the Diocese and the wider church.’

Bishop Robert comments: ‘We had a strong set of applications for this post. I am delighted with Damian’s appointment and thrilled that we shall be welcoming Damian into our Diocese. I am confident that he will provide the strong leadership we need in communications and Anglican representation to European Institutions. Please do join with me in welcoming Damian, and pray for him as he and his young family prepare to move from the UK to Belgium.
