Father Tom Lands In Lanzarote

Rev Tom Barnfather was given a very warm ecumenical welcome when he was instituted as Priest-in-Charge of St Laurence in Lanzarote, Canary Islands.  The Institution took place in the Catholic Church at Puerto del Carmen, one of the chaplaincy’s four worship centres on the island.  It was conducted by the Area Dean of the Gibraltar Archdeaconry, Canon Hugh Broad, with the Dean of Gibraltar, the Very Revd. Dr John Paddock, as celebrant for the Eucharist.

In the service, Fr. Tom and his wife, Rosie, were welcomed by two of the local Catholic clergy, as well as the pastors of the island’s German and Norwegian churches, and Revd. Mike Smith, Chaplain of Tenerife North, who welcomed him to the Canarian “cluster”.   Representatives of the Anglican Congregation on the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura which receives pastoral support from Lanzarote were also present to greet Fr. Tom.

Fr. Tom comes to the Diocese of Europe from St. Saviour’s, Westgate-on-Sea, Kent, moving from one island, Thanet, to a very different one close to the coast of Africa.  The Chaplaincy in Lanzarote marked its 25th Anniversary last year, so Fr. Tom’s arrival marks a joyous start to a new chapter in the ministry there.
