Why 50 People Marked 50 Years With Indonesian Food In Holland

The Anglican Church at Zwolle in the Netherlands has begun its fiftieth anniversary celebrations with an international flavour. Some 50 people attended the service of Evening Prayer with an Indonesian buffet afterwards. Guest of honour was Ruth van den Berg, one of the founding members.

At the end of the service the Lutheran pastor, Lucien Everleijn, who made his church available for the services back in 1962 presented the congregation with a candle he had made himself. Then the Chaplain of Utrecht, John de Wit, presented the sole surviving founding member, Ruth van den Berg, with flowers (pictured with this story). In the church hall the sumptuous Indonesian buffet - an apt choice of meal, as three long-standing members of the congregation were born in Indonesia.

Anglican Church Zwolle, a daughter congregation of Holy Trinity Utrecht, is a growing church of about fifty people known for its friendly atmosphere. Members range from 7 to 93 years in age and are an interesting mix of expats and Dutch. Services are on the first and third Sunday of each month and are still held in the Lutheran Church where the congregation first met in 1962.
