In Memory Of A Man With A Mission

Revd Thomas Patrick Peter Heffer (Tom) 1969-2012, Secretary General, Missions to Seafarers.

The funeral of Fr Tom Heffer was held in Norwich Cathedral on Wednesday 9 May. The service was led by the Bishop of Norwich, Rt Revd Graham James and the Eulogy given by Canon Bill Christianson, former Sec Gen of the Missions to Seafarers.

A tribute, written by Tom’s daughter Abi, was read, and Tom’s wife, Roz, read ‘Funeral Blues’ by W H Auden; Robert Woods,  Chairman of MtoS Council, read Tennyson’s ‘Crossing the Bar’.

In the Eulogy, the large congregation heard of Tom’s great pastoral skills and sense of humour. He had started at MtoS as a Chaplain’s Assistant in New Orleans and gone on to a further post in Singapore.

In his Introduction to the Order of Service, the Bishop of Norwich, wrote about the five-year plan for future work, which Tom had already written, requiring negotiation with Bishops, Chaplains, and local congregations. Part of that involves work in the Diocese in Europe, including ports in the Netherlands, France, and Germany. We thank God for every remembrance of him.
