Behold I Stand At The Door In Safety

St Andrew’s church in the Swedish city of Gothenburg was built in 1857 – long before the days of stringent fire regulations. But a recent inspection revealed concerns about the position of the door from the church into the vestry.

But since it forms part of the wooden screen behind the altar it needed a lot of careful planning and discussion before it could be removed, remodelled and replaced.

Rev Barbara Moss from St Andrew’s is seen in front of the original door and she says the new arrangement has been done with sensitivity. She also recalled the old prayer by Bishop Thomas Ken, which may be seen on the wall of St Stephen's Church, Wallbrook in London.

O God make the door of this house wide enough
to receive all who need human love and fellowship,
and a heavenly Father’s care,
and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hate.
Make its threshold smooth enough
to be no stumbling-block to children, nor to straying feet,
but rugged enough to turn back the tempter’s power:
make it a gateway to thine eternal kingdom.
