Pentecost Wind Whispers Through The Carob Trees

The Pentecost gospel told of a “rushing mighty wind” and of “tongues like fire” but for a congregation in Spain the wind merely whispered through the carob trees and the heat came from the sun in an open air Eucharist.

The three congregations of St Christopher’s on the Costa Azahar, north of Valencia, united in the service in a church member’s large garden overlooking the Mediterranean in Ampolla.

Their Australian locum priest, Fr. Kevin Ellem, spoke passionately of the power of God’s Spirit to invigorate His Church today. Fr Kevin added a native touch to the occasion by leading the service wearing an outback approved sun hat.

Afterwards worshippers enjoyed lunch. Churchwarden Ron Legg said “Living in such a lovely climate offers precious opportunities to worship in the open air. It helps us build our three local congregations together and invigorates our faith as we continue to pray for a new priest to lead us.”
