Coronation Memorabilia And Music To Match

As churches around the Diocese continue to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth a special service with anthems at St George´s church in Berlin was festooned with a rare piece of memorabilia from the Coronation in June 1953 in Westminster Abbey (pictured above). St George’s is the proud owner the Panoply pictured above. It was part of the decoration in Westminster Abbey for the Coronation. On a commemorative plaque the following text is printed: “The Panoply hanging Above formed part of the Decoration in Westminster Abbey for the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2nd June 1953. It was brought to Berlin for a British Exhibition and subsequently purchased by the Council of this Church in 1956”

Music during the service in Berlin included Handel´s “Zadok the Priest” and Parry´s “I was glad” – which also featured in a service in the Southern Spanish church at Nerja. It was attended by 180 people (including some young families) in church for the Service of Thanksgiving.  The International Choir "Coraxalia" led the singing and afterwards everyone shared in a Street Party in the Plaza Andalucia which had been decorated with flags and bunting for the occasion.
