“a Church Filled With Love For Father Haynes”

“On Sunday 17 June in the large chaplaincy which covers the Algarve in Portugal the service which filled the church in Praia da Luz was attended from people from many different parts of the community as well as regular congregation members. Visitors included the British consul, the British legion, teachers and head teachers from local schools and representatives from other churches in the Algarve. Some members of the congregation who are not normally in Luz at this time flew in especially for the occasion” writes Joyce Daffy, Chaplaincy Warden.

People who attended the service described how they felt the church was filled with love for Father Haynes and his family. They were reminded how Fr Haynes had taken over just 3 days after Madeline McCann had gone missing and he had coped with the media frenzy so well. Fr. Haynes was also commended for having taken over the chaplaincy after a difficult time with unhelpful media coverage so the Algarve church now has a respected place in the Algarve itself and more widely in The Diocese in Europe.

Following the service approximately 100 people joined in a buffet lunch at the local golf club where gifts were presented.Father Haynes is moving with his family to a parish in Ontario, within the Church of Canada, to take on other parochial duties.
