European Welcome For New Archbishop

News of the confirmation of The Rt Rev Justin Welby as the 105th  Archbishop of Canterbury, to succeed Dr Rowan Williams, has been welcomed in the Diocese in Europe.

Our Bishop, Dr Geoffrey Rowell says “I am delighted, together with Bishop David, to welcome the news of the appointment of the Bishop of Durham, Justin Welby, as Archbishop of Canterbury in succession to Dr Rowan Williams. He will need the prayers and support of all Anglicans as he takes up the challenging responsibilities in England and in the Communion. As Bishop of the Diocese in Europe I welcome Bishop Justin as one who knows our diocese from the time that he worked in Paris. I was pleased to get to know Justin Welby personally when, shortly before his move to Durham, he came to France to preach at the ordination of the Revd Tim Watson, a member of the Chemin Neuf community, an ordinand of our diocese, whom Bishop Justin had invited to serve his title post at Liverpool Cathedral when he was Dean of Liverpool. Bishop Justin will bring to his new ministry much experience of the secular world as well as knowledge of places of tension in the Christian world from his visits to the Church of Nigeria, together with a deep personal faith. We pray with him and for him.”  +Geoffrey Gibraltar.

Members of the Gibraltar Archdeaconry Synod have particular reason to wish the new Archbishop well. In February 2011, when he was still Dean of Liverpool, he travelled to Spain for the annual Synod meeting and spoke about his concerns for the ministry of reconciliation and how Christians can grow together. His address was impressive and has been long remembered.
