A Big Day For General Synod

Diocese in Europe rep Ann Turner was much in the media spotlight on Tuesday 11 Feb during the debates at General Synod. It was an honour to see her chairing a session, keeping a fair and firm hand on the contributions on fees which involved some complex points of ecclesiastical law. The latest proposals are being sent to dioceses for their assent before they are finally agreed in July. During the debate Canon Debbie Flach was commended for her speech

In addition to Women Bishops, Synod also discussed Clergy Pensions, fees for weddings, funerals and the possibility of a fee for baptisms as well as the fees for legal officers of dioceses.

Today, says Ann, is a full day with sessions on Safeguarding in the light of the report on Chichester, enviroment, Girl Guides And the Pilling report on sexuality - recently discussed by the House of Bishops.

Archdeacon Jonathan LLoyd has asked some written questions and is awaiting a formal response. His concerns are:-

1) What is the Mission & Public Affairs Division doing to encourage reconciliation and peace as themes of WW1 Centenary?
2) What is the Ethical Investment Advisory Group doing to challenge Royal Dutch Shell on its drilling operations in the Arctic, which have high environmental risks?
