THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST. PAUL’S, ATHENS, GREECE : SENIOR CHAPLAIN
THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST. PAUL’S, ATHENS,
GREECE POST: SENIOR CHAPLAIN
Are you interested in leading a multi-national, inclusive English speaking community in our beautiful, historic city, in guiding and expanding our congregation and in maintaining and strengthening our relationships with other faith groups and organisations? Consecrated in 1843, our city-centre church offers pastoral support to people of all ages, from different cultures and backgrounds.
We have an excellent record of training and supporting people in using and developing their gifts. We work in ever-closer cooperation with the Swedish church in Athens and maintain a good relationship with the Greek Orthodox Church, whilst appreciating our differences. We adhere to the Diocesan Safeguarding Policy and aim to become a Net Zero Chaplaincy.
Charitable giving and working with migrant issues are important to us and we join with partner organizations and other churches in community outreach. We are well-known for our fundraising activities – two annual Bazaars, social events and the hire of the church for concerts - and welcome pilgrim groups “In the Footsteps of St. Paul” and a large number of tourists to our services. Our Chaplain will have leadership skills, a strong desire to welcome families and young people into our congregation and promote Christian teaching and values within it, the skills necessary to promote existing good relationships with Ministries and political figures and an understanding of the need to attend important national religious and other events.
The post includes the position of Chairperson of the Board of the Anglican Church in Greece (Athens, Crete, Corfu and Patras) and occasional visits to out-of-town congregations, including Thessalonika. To maintain good ecumenical relations with the Greek Orthodox Church, principally through the role of Apokrisarios. A resolution has been passed under the House of Bishops declaration on the ministry of Bishops and Priests.
We offer an attractive package that includes spacious accommodation (an apartment in a desirable area of the city not far from the church), an appropriate stipend, pension contributions (if appropriate) and a share of utility bills. The successful candidate, if neither Greek nor an EU national, will need to obtain the necessary work and residence permits.
