An Archbishop at church in the morning and a Bishop in the afternoon
St George's Church, Lisbon recently had a memorable Sunday with Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishop of York, presiding over Eucharist in the morning, followed by a confirmation service by Bishop David in the afternoon. Assistant Chaplain, Iain Bendery, shares more about the day:
“Following on from an awesome week with young people, Sunday 6 August was another amazing day at St George´s Church. In the morning the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell presided at the Eucharist while I preached. He is always relaxed, and he just fits in with the church. You don´t need to worry about changing great swathes of the service.
“Then in the afternoon, Bishop David led a service of confirmation with a full immersion baptism. How often do you get an Archbishop in the morning and a Bishop in the afternoon!
“The service of confirmation was beautiful. four young people (Eduardo, Eduardo & Marcio from Lisbon together with Kristina from Moscow) publicly affirmed their faith and desire to take the next steps in their walk with Christ. During the service Eduardo was also baptised by full immersion in a pool set up outside in the cemetery. It was beautiful, even if Bishop David did get a little wet...
“There is a growing number of young people joining St George´s Church, either citizens, students or young professionals. They add a new dimension to our ministry in Lisbon. I look forward to welcoming many more into the church family and hope that we can make good use of our newly acquired pool (thanks Eduardo) and another confirmation soon!”
