New Archdeacon of Italy and Malta, Archdeacon of Gibraltar
It is with great joy that we announce that The Revd. Canon David Waller has been invited to take up the post of Archdeacon of Italy and Malta and Archdeacon of Gibraltar, in succession to Acting Archdeacon Geoff Johnston.
Canon Waller is currently Chaplain of the Anglican Church of St Philip and St James, Palma de Mallorca. He will be commissioned and licensed to his new Archidiaconal ministry on 14 January 2020.
David brings with him a huge amount of pastoral, administrative and management experience, having been a priest for over thirty years. He was brought up in south London and attended University at Roehampton before moving on to three years theological training at Ripon College Cuddesdon, near Oxford, back in the late 1980s. David has served in three English parishes and one University Chaplaincy and his last UK post was as a Team Rector for a busy parish in Plymouth.
Canon David has been an Area Dean for northern Spain for the last five years, where he has had particular interests in clergy wellbeing and support – notably in creating and chairing a cluster group for clergy. He has been chair of the Archdeaconry of Gibraltar Standing Committee and played a significant role in organising the annual Gibraltar Synod. His work in the chaplaincy has included the creation of a new satellite church community at Palma Nova.
Announcing their invitation to David to take up this new role, Bishop Robert and Bishop David said:
“This is a new post and a challenging one. So please do give your support to the Archdeacon designate, and remember him and his wife Julie in your prayers as he takes on this new role. And of course, we pray for the chaplaincy of Mallorca, who are now preparing to say farewell to their much-loved Chaplain.”
David said:
“I am excited by the opportunity that I have now been given to support Chaplaincy ministry and the wellbeing of the clergy in these two Archdeaconries. I very much look forward to building on existing friendships and developing new ones in order to listen properly and to serve colleagues and the Diocese in this calling and ministry.”
