Silver success for Holy Trinity, Funchal
Holy Trinity in Funchal, situated in Madeira, has achieved the A Rocha EcoChurch silver award.
Although some aspects of the award were not applicable to the chaplaincy being in the Diocese in Europe, there were many other sections that they had to work hard on to meet the criteria.
Collaborating closely with local international schools, Holy Trinity organised discussions including a garden survey held during Messy Church. These sessions led to a thoughtful decision to preserve nature and leave the weeds to grow amongst the tree roots. This has proved especially beneficial for the Monarch Butterfly’s ecosystem. The chaplaincy also created a bug hotel, fostering an environment where Salamanders found sanctuary.
Internally, the chaplaincy now use eco-friendly cleaning products such as vinegar and have installed automatic switches to conserve energy. Other daily habit changes include cup usage and a new washing up procedure.
Guiding the chaplaincy in their sustainable journey, is Jean Faulkner, the Local Environmental Officer of the chaplaincy. Her efforts have been instrumental in taking Holy Trinity, Funchal, from passive to an active champion for the environment.
Jean said: "It is vital that we all work together, or we will not achieve it."
Holy Trinity, Funchal, continues its eco-journey, aiming for the gold award.
