Shakespeare in Spanish!
Fr Louis Darrant, Chaplain at St George’s, Malaga recently held a local Shakespearean event.
He shared a little about the evening with us: "The English Cemetery is home to two famous contemporary writes, Jorge Guillen and Gerald Brenan. It was a huge privilege to welcome academics from across South America who have published their own translations of works from Shakespeare. I spoke about Shakespeare’s understanding of human nature and the context of his work during a time of deep religious upheaval. By coincidence an academic from Chile shared her translated of a line I had already quoted in English in my welcoming remarks, a line from King Lear, ‘Let us take upon ourselves the mystery of things as if we were God’s spies’. My desire is for St George’s in Malaga to be a meeting point for people from different languages and cultures as we share something of the Anglican spirit in Andalucia.”
