Diocesan Foundations
In this part of the Handbook we present our foundational legal documents.
First, the legal Measure which in 1980 established the Diocese in its present form, bringing together the original Diocese of Gibraltar with the areas of Northern and Central Europe formerly within the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Bishop of London.
Second, the Constitution of the Diocese which dates from 1995 but was last amended in February 2020, with three documents showing how Church of England legislation is to be applied in the Diocese in Europe:
The Archbishop's Instrument of 31 January 2011 (dealing with a wide range of legislation);
The Archbishop's Instrument of 21 October 2013 (dealing with the Clergy Discipline Measure); and
The Archbishop's Instrument of 12 February 2020 (dealing with Canon C12 and the licensing of clergy).
The Canons of the Church of England are referenced throughout the Handbook, often with direct links.
