What needs to be ‘preserved?
To preserve their entitlement to a state pension in UK, chaplains who have already been contributors to UK National Insurance will need to maintain Class III National Insurance contributions.
Class III contributions ensure pension rights but not payment of sickness benefits in UK. Entitlement to sickness benefit, in the event of inability to work on returning to UK, can be maintained by paying Class II contributions.
The payment of Class II contributions is strongly recommended, whether or not there is reciprocal agreement with the particular country.
What needs to be done?
Those accepting appointments in the Diocese and who wish to preserve their rights to a UL stat pension and sickness benefit (on returning to the UK) are strongly urged read the UK Government leaflet NI38 (available at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/social-security-abroad-ni38). A form 9CF83 is at the end of the leaflet and should be sent back to the HMRC using the address on the form.
Responsibility for the payment of the appropriate contributions rests with the individual seeking the continuing entitlements.
